Omnivore alternatives for people who care about ownership
Omnivore was the read-it-later app for people who cared about openness — open source, exportable, community-run in spirit. Then it was acquired and shut down within weeks in late 2024, and its users learned the same lesson Pocket's did soon after: hosted is hosted, however friendly the licence.
If you're replacing Omnivore, you probably valued ownership and control more than the average reader. These are the options that respect that.
Wallabag — the philosophical successor
Open source and self-hostable, Wallabag is the closest match to what Omnivore stood for. Run it yourself and it can never be taken from you. The cost is operational: it's your server, your updates, your uptime. The hosted version removes that burden but quietly reintroduces the dependency.
Readeck — the newer self-hosted option
Readeck is a leaner, newer self-hosted read-it-later that many ex-Omnivore users speak well of — clean reader, good article capture, simple deployment. Same fundamental deal as Wallabag: durable if you're happy running it.
Instapaper & Raindrop — hosted comfort
Both are mature, pleasant, and import your data easily. They're covered in depth in our Pocket alternatives guide — the short version is that they're excellent products with the one structural property Omnivore users are rightly wary of: the library lives on someone else's machine.
Bookplate — ownership without a server at all
Disclosure: this is our app. Bookplate takes the Omnivore lesson to its logical end — instead of open-sourcing the server, it removes the server. Your library is stored on your own device, readable offline, exportable as a plain file at any time, with no account. Free and unlimited, with no account — nothing to self-host, nothing to be acquired. It stays free through website ads and a small in-app ad shown only while online.
DISCLOSURE: BOOKPLATE IS PUBLISHED BY US. DETAILS ACCURATE TO THE BEST OF OUR KNOWLEDGE, JULY 2026 — VERIFY ON EACH PRODUCT'S SITE. THIS PAGE MAY DISPLAY ADVERTISING.
